Teacher Texting and Good Samaritans

Posted in United States by Amanda Roberts on Jul 24, 2008

The Good:Ludwig Geier, a 70-year-old machine shop owner, almost lost everything. As he was leaving First National Bank in California the wind swept the man’s recently withdrawled money all around the parking lot. In what could have been a massive robbery, about a dozen people jumped up to help Geier retrieve his money. Of the hundreds of bills that were blown away, about 96% were given back to Mr. Geier. I guess this shows that there are some good people left.

The Bad: The Lamar County School District is trying to drive a wall between teachers and students. The School District, worried about some of the teacher misconduct in other states decided to create a ban in teacher student communication on websites and text messages. The ban is meant to limit the personal conversations between teachers and students, but I think it’s just silly.

My senior year almost every teacher gave me their phone number. Over the course of the year and after I have used it multiple times to check homework, answer questions, and report my progress. Many children though are not as hone literate as they used to be, so they rely on texts and Myspace. Despite the bad things that have happens, I think that this is another method of communication. If your student could have access to their teacher for a problem, why wouldn’t you want them to have it?

The Blue Pill and Sleepy Ladies

Posted in Health by Amanda Roberts on Jul 22, 2008

The Bad: Did you ever think that sleep could be bad for you? A study at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill recently studied women at risk for stroke and the amount of time that they slept. Now this study yielded some interesting results. The researchers found that women who didn’t sleep between 6.5 and 7.5 hours had a higher risk of stroke than the women who slept between 6.5 and 7.5 hours a night. Now the researchers were not sure why things were this way and what made the women more likely to have a stroke, but the research defiantly showed that it is better to get more sleep than less. Women who had less than 6.5 hours of sleep were the most likely of any of the groups tested to have a stroke. So close your eyes and take a nap ladies.

Youtube Divorce and Silly Dance

Posted in Science/Technology by Amanda Roberts on Jul 21, 2008

The Good: Matt Harding, just an ordinary guy who worked as a video game designer for years decided one day to leave it all. Matt took his money and traveled around the world. The suggestion of a friend lead him to start an interesting mission, to dance in every country he visited. And there began the legacy of the silly dance. Matt’s silly dance, a convoluted mix of convulsions and the Cotton Eye Joe, made its way slowly and surely to each country he visited, and the videos made it to YouTube.

The YouTube videos led to the Matt craze, with his videos getting hundreds of thousands of views. Five years after the beginning his travels, Matt has hooked up with a charity to make a video of massive proportions. More than a year of traveling through 42 countries all led up to one video, Where the Hell is Matt? You can watch the video below, and stare in amazement as a four and a half minute video brings you face to face with so many different cultures. This video isn’t just for poops and giggles though. This video is helping to put laptops in the hands of children in Rwanda, where he will teach in the coming years. So help support Matt and those kids by watch his video.

The Bad: How would you feel if your wife trashed you in front of millions of people. That is what happened to the husband of Tricia Walsh-Smith. Walsh-Smith, once an actress in England, made a YouTube video calling her husband horrible names and making claims that he was an inadequate lover. One look at the videos and a judge allowed her husband a divorce. When the judge allowed the divorce Tricia Walsh-Smith said that her ex husband was “basically throwing me out on the street.” All of this despite the $750,000 pre-nuptial sum of money she will be getting. Its too bad he has to pay her anything.
